Bullying as a Serious Problem

“Bullying is currently a serious and prevalent problem in our schools. Its negative effects are not limited to individual children who bully or those who are victimized by peers. Bullying is a systemic social problem that impacts the entire school, and has far reaching implications for children’s social and emotional adjustment.” (Interventions for Academic and Behavior Problems, Snell et al., 351)

Honolulu’s Washington Middle School principal, Michael Harano said students are advised at the beginning of every school year about consequences for inappropriate behavior, such as bullying, but incidents still occur. He admits that if people are really interested in trying to get no bullying to occur in schools, it needs to be linked to parent training.

A teacher, who was a victim of bullying, asked “Where are the preventive measures? Where are the programs? And where are the trainings?” She said she left teaching after a few years because some of her students verbally and physically harassed her.

  1. What doesn't show in this article is the definition of bullying. So do pollsters know what it is before answering?

Wikipedia says, "Bullying is an act of repeated aggressive behavior in order to intentionally hurt another person, physically or mentally. Bullying is characterized by an individual behaving in a certain way to gain power over another person....

Norwegian researcher Dan Olweus defines bullying as when a person is "exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons." He defines negative action as "when a person intentionally inflicts injury or discomfort upon another person, through physical contact, through words or in other ways". - Wikipedia (bullying)

  2. Prevention starts at an early age... both in the home and at any venue of education. Includes civic understanding, personal responsibility, self-control,forgiveness,conflict resolution...

Includes also open discussions, role playing, understanding benefit of diversity, valuing others equally to yourself, knowing how to share your feelings and emotions in a positive way...

Cannot really prevent others from bullying me, but I can have the right skills and responses when I am bullied. Takes time and effort. But can.
