All efforts to meet the basic learning needs of primary school children must be rooted in the culture of the society to which the child belongs. By culture, we normally mean the way of life of a society its shared modes of thinking, acting and feeling expressed in language, religion, law, art, customs and other aspects of daily life as well as material possessions. One's cultural roots are the very essence of one's identity and sense of belonging: they give meaning, purpose and direction to our lives. As an old Chinese proverb goes: "We cannot know the village where we are going, unless we know the village from whence we came".
